The honor is ours

The University of Tulsa recently unveiled its plan to build upon the existing TU Honors Program to create an Honors College with the help of the newly appointed inaugural dean, Jennifer Frey. President Brad Carson expressed that Frey’s liberal arts expertise will advance TU’s renaissance “to achieve the type of education that is essential to human flourishing.” The Honors College will enroll its first students in the fall of 2024.

Cancer-fighting tech

Associate Professors of Chemistry and Biochemistry Angus Lamar and Robert Sheaff are teaming up with FortySix Venture Capital LLC to license their novel cancer screening technologies for commercialization efforts. “This agreement provides an opportunity to see our research efforts lead to better, more effective chemotherapeutics targeting hard-to-treat cancers,” Sheaff said. The commercialization of the technology underscores the university’s sincere investment in faculty and student inventions and research.

Since 2020, Lizaimee Mata-Steger (BA ’10) has been applying and preparing for a life-changing career move. Now, Steger is finally gearing up to start life in a new country through the Foreign Service branch of the U.S. Department of State. As a regional public engagement specialist, Steger will partner with local governments and organizations to assess how best to maintain friendly and peaceful relations between U.S. citizens and other countries through educational, cultural and professional exchanges.

McFarlin innovations

For some, changes brought by the digital age can be intimidating and, at times, frightening. However, McFarlin Library and its staff are excited by the potential for growth as technology advances. From teaching integral research skills to first-year students to expanding accessibility and collecting data on the comings and goings of McFarlin, this campus hot spot will continue to evolve, “not away from books, but toward service,” as academia and student life progress.
