Welcome Back from the Department Chair
|
With fall rapidly approaching, it’s time to say hello again to returning students and welcome newcomers to the University of Utah! I hope you have had restful, productive, fun summers with a bit of adventure mixed in. I’m thrilled to introduce three new colleagues who are joining the History Department this fall: Rohan Chatterjee, who is a historian of modern Latin America; Kiki Mackaman-Lofland, a scholar of modern France and Francophone Africa; and Wenrui Zhao, a historian of early modern Europe with an emphasis on science and technology. Please watch for their courses and help us welcome them to the University of Utah!
As a new semester gets underway, I hope you all have a great experience engaging with your classmates and professors and diving into a new body of coursework. College can be demanding and stressful, but it is also an exciting opportunity to open your mind and expand your horizons. I hope you enjoy your courses, make new friends, and look for opportunities to take advantage of the many things the University of Utah has to offer. Join the History Student Association and attend department events; explore the cultural offerings of Utah Presents; visit campus museums; go to sporting events; join an intramural league. The University of Utah offers a first-rate education and lots else besides. Welcome to campus—I hope you make the most of your time here.

Professor Catalina 'Kiki' Mackaman-Lofland |
Ask me about... "how Algerian university students were central to protesting French colonialism in the 1950s and later supporting Algerian nationalism, pan-Africanism, and Third Worldism in the 1960s. Outside of these academic interests, ask me why I think desert blues from the Sahel is one of the most exciting musical genres today."

I think the most important role I play at the U... definitely teaching. Universities are fantastic places to be exposed to new ideas and learn about other parts of the world, and I believe that history classes offer excellent entry to both. While the history of France and its empire may seem far removed from our lives in the United States today, I believe that learning about them is important to understanding the contemporary world and current issues, such as democracy and political change, colonialism, race, immigration, and global power.
