Dear Members and Friends,
We are starting to plan for our eventual re-opening and the measures that will be in place to ensure that museum visitors and staff are safe. As soon as we are able to announce a target date for re-opening, you will be among the first to know!

In the meantime, stay well. The staff and I miss the museum – especially this time of year when the garden is in full bloom – and we miss our visitors. We are all looking forward to the time when we can be together at Maryhill.

And while we are currently closed to the public, there is still plenty of good news to report. I hope you'll read on to see what we have been up to.

MUSEUM NEWS

Kudos to Our Museum Staff!

I would like to take a moment to recognize our exceptional staff. During the shutdown, they have gone above and beyond to keep the museum moving forward. From engaging with visitors online, and rescheduling programs and events, to processing memberships, updating our collections database, researching future exhibitions and programs, and managing our annual audit, the staff has demonstrated remarkable dedication and resourcefulness – all while working remotely! The museum is in good hands and the gardens look beautiful, thanks to the work of our caretaker Mike Clough. To all – THANK YOU!

Stonehenge Restoration Assessment Underway

Maryhill recently received $7,500 from the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation to support a conservation assessment of Stonehenge Memorial; an additional $4,000 came from the Klickitat County Historical Preservation Grants Program. These gifts are funding a focused conservation assessment of the Memorial. Additional funds will be needed to complete the assessment and develop recommendations to better preserve the Memorial into the future. As part of the project, the museum plans to nominate the Memorial to the National Register of Historic Places. Once the museum has the recommendations for preservation, we will apply for funding to support the needed work that will preserve the Memorial into the future. The altar stone was dedicated in 1918 and when completed in 1929, the Memorial was rededicated, making it 91 years old.

Thanks to the generosity of two donors who have offered a challenge of up to $10,000, any donation that you make now will be doubled! Your support will help offset the loss of revenue from admissions, events and rentals, because of the museum's closure. If you are able, please consider making a donation online today.

Teachers As Artists: Women of Influence

Teachers As Artists is an annual juried exhibition in the museum’s M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center. In 2020 we invited regional arts educators to submit work influenced by women in their lives. C lick here to see the exhibition online.

Teachers as Artists is a partnership with Oregon Art Education Association and Washington Art Education Association. The exhibition featuring Oregon arts educators is scheduled for the fall. Click here for information on submissions.
