News Update: Open Banking momentum grows in Bahrain
The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has become one of the early adopters of open banking in Middle East and Africa, following the recent launch of its first set of open banking solutions. This comes after the Central Bank of Bahrain introduced a regulation that mandated the adoption of open banking by all banks in the Kingdom by 30 June 2019.

The bank collaborated with Bahrain’s first licensed open banking systems provider, Tarabut Gateway, to create its solution. NBB’s first open banking offering is aggregation of account services through its online platforms. Customers will be able to view and track their finances across all accounts via the NBB Open Banking app. The next phase will introduce financial transactions and other services.

Open banking is the practice of banks sharing their customers’ financial information. Electronically, securely and with the customer’s permission. Application programming interfaces (APIs) are used to allow third-parties to access this data efficiently, which promotes the development of new apps and services from a range of providers, including  fintechs.

The EU and the UK are leading the world in open banking with laws that require their banks to create APIs and open those APIs to third-party developers. The trend is expected to bring major disruption to the sector -- Accenture estimates that by end 2020, €61 billion or 7 percent of the total banking revenue pool in Europe will be associated with activities enabled by open banking.

Some market observers see this as an opportunity to transform customer experiences in n the Middle East.  “[Governments] are recognising that consumers want fast, easy transactions and visibility data across all sources.” writes Abdulla Almoayed, Almoayed Technologies CEO. “Fintech is …working to pose a direct challenge to often outdated business practices.”
