NEWS FROM THE NINTH WARD
I wanted to update this post to let you know that the United in Love and Action: A Coalition Response to Hate, Bigotry, and Misogyny event was spearheaded by Council Vice President Elizabeth Glidden and co-hosted by the entire Council and our Mayor Hodges. We joined more than 20 community organizations, a dozen state elected officials and 400 residents to build community and plan for what's ahead in these trying times. Check out the Facebook event, linked above, to stay connected to next steps.
            YOUR CITY, YOUR MONEY
Dear Neighbors,
This morning the Minneapolis City Council began the budget mark-up process to amend and adopt the Mayor's proposed $1.3 billion* budget. I was happy to support a significant budget amendment effort led by Council Member Andrew Johnson to establish a Small Business Support Group and a Small Business Workteam to ensure that our small business community can better thrive.
There were additional amendments and a robust discussion about community policing during our morning meeting and I invite you to visit the City's website to watch the video of our debate.
The budget process will continue with a public hearing scheduled for this coming Wednesday, December 7th at 6:00 p.m. where members of the community are invited to attend and share testimony. Council Members will cast their final vote that night to adopt the amended budget.
Each year your beautiful show of solidarity and the community coming out in force has stopped budget proposals that threaten the vitality of our community or you have helped restore funding cuts to efforts you care about.
I invite you to come participate in the budget public hearing and final vote on December 7th to make your voice heard and to protect the investments that will help us end the racial inequities in our city.
With love and justice,
In a previous newsletter, it was stated that the City budget was $1.3 million. The actual amount is $1.3 billion while the $1.3 million referred to the total investment slated for the infill housing budget request, which is a budget request I have been actively working to shape over the past weeks leading up to the budget amendment period. Apologies for the confusion.
