"My College Experience"

Soddy Daisy High School Faculty & Staff share some thoughts on their own college experiences.

Darren Slade

  • College/University: Modesto Junior College
  • Why did you attend this school: did not have the grades/funds for university
  • Degree/Major: Associate's
  • Minor: Spanish
  • Extracurricular Activities: CES Institute
  • Favorite college memories: Ping pong, volleyball, and voice classes
  • Favorite class/professor and why: Intro. to Debate. The teacher was extremely enthusiastic about his craft.
  • What do you know now that you wish you had known then: Just because you are placed in a class doesn't mean you have to take it.
  • Best piece of advice for our current SDHS seniors: If your grades aren't the best, and you don't have any scholarships, keep junior colleges in mind for undergraduate work. They save you a lot of money on tuition!

Amie Wilson

  • College/University: Lee University
  • Why did you attend this school: I wanted the Christian worldview with a solid liberal arts foundation.
  • Degree/Major: Double majored in French and English
  • Minor: Christian theology
  • Graduate Schools/Degrees: University of Virginia, 2011, M.A.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Pi Delta Phi, French Honors Society; Sigma Tau Delta, English Honors Society
  • Favorite college memories: Going to the Shakespeare Tavern in Atlanta with the English Honors Society
  • Favorite class/professor and why: African Literature and 19th Century French Literature, both taught by Dr. Jim Wilkins -- He required critical thought in a way I'd never had to do before, and the subject matter opened up WORLDS for me.
  • What do you know now that you wish you had known then: Take the time to be SOCIAL. It's not just about the work.
  • Best piece of advice for our current SDHS seniors: Be wise, kind, and honest in all things.
