Professor Cary J. Nederman (POLS) wrote a chapter titled “Papacy, Peace and Political Science: Collective Action Problems in the Defensor pacis.” The chapter considers the acclaimed fourteenth-century political theorist Marsiglio (Marsilius) of Padua as a “political scientist” whose thought parallels several key elements of contemporary social science in order to advance his critique of the power of the church over temporal politics.

On September 21, the Economic Statecraft Program virtually hosted Amb. (R) Craig Allen, head of the U.S.-China Business Council, for a presentation and open-forum QA of industrial policy and its changing role in economic statecraft.

On September 28, the Economic Statecraft Program virtually hosted Dr. Marc Lanteigne for a presentation and open-forum QA of weaponized interdependence and China’s developing digital currency. Dr. Lanteigne is an associate professor of political science at the University of Tromsø—The Arctic University of Norway with research expertise in China and East Asia foreign policy, Sino-Arctic relations, and China’s commercial diplomacy.
