Notre Dame researchers’ data-driven approach to protecting wildlife receives $1.5 million from the NSF

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $1.5 million to a multidisciplinary team of faculty researchers at the University of Notre Dame who are working to protect wildlife from impending threats caused by climate change. The project, “Exploiting Federal Data and Beyond: A Multi-modal Knowledge Network for Comprehensive Wildlife Management under Climate Change,” will result in a comprehensive platform to support data-driven approaches to wildlife management.

What do AlphaFold2, ESM1&2, ChatGPT, GPT-4, DALL-E, and a growing list of generative AI methods have in common? Without getting into the weeds of architectural details, the word disruption comes to mind. Shehu will apply her laboratory’s work on generative AI towards addressing this question, and will instantiate it on diverse wicked problems in molecular biology and human health.

Eric Ravussin, Boyd Professor at Louisiana State University, will review the data on the impact of caloric restriction on biomarkers of aging and lifespan in rodents and present his own data in humans. He will also discuss the newly emerging strategies of fasting including alternate-day modified fast and time-restricted feeding to improve metabolic health and potentially physical and cognitive functionality.
