Final reviews at the Huckabee College of Architecture (HCOA) in Lubbock and El Paso wrapped up earlier this month and were held from April 27th through May 2nd, 2023.
There was an exciting and inspiring energy from both students and faculty from all year levels who presented their semester-long projects over the four days of final reviews. Congratulations to all students and faculty on your tremendous work and for finishing the semester strong! Thank you to our guest critics who traveled from all over the country to join us for final reviews this spring.

Graduation celebrations at Texas Tech University came to a close over the past week with over 100 undergraduate and 40 graduate degrees granted to our students in Lubbock and El Paso!
Commencement ceremonies for HCOA undergraduate and graduate students were held May 12th, and May 13th, at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas, and in El Paso, Texas, on May 17th.
Congratulations to each of our spring 2023 graduates, and best wishes as you embark on the next chapter of your lives!

Huckabee College of Architecture El Paso held the opening reception for its End of Year Student Exhibition at the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) on May 6th, 2023. The exhibition is located in EPMA’s Museum Connect and displays work from all 3rd and 4th year HCOA students in El Paso.

The Huckabee College of Architecture is excited to announce that the End of Year Show in Lubbock is officially open and ready for visitors!
The show is located throughout the ground floor and Gallery of the college and exhibits work from our graduating students.
This show is open to the public, and will remain on display until the fall semester.

Professor Joe Aranha attended the International Association for the Study of Traditional Environments (IASTE) Annual Conference in Singapore. He chaired a session, “Tradition and Economic Regeneration,” and presented a paper titled “Continuity and Change in Traditional Architecture in Tenganan, Bali, Indonesia.” The paper presents a narrative in support of the notion that innovative and sensitive architectural design can foster continuity of tradition, sustain architectural heritage, and also accommodate contemporary needs and changing lifestyles within a traditional society.

Dean Urs Peter “Upe” Flueckiger, along with Ahmed ElHusseiny, AIA, and Stephanie Kingsnorth, AIA, served as a jurors for the 2023 AIA Austin Design Awards. This award recognizes the very best of Austin architecture and is juried by a group of architects from around the United States. The awards celebration was held on May 17th, 2023, at the Austin PBS Media Center.

Assistant Professor Erin Hunt was awarded the Texas Tech Alumni Association (TTAA) New Faculty Award. This award is presented to faculty who have four years, or fewer, of service at any university and who have earned distinction for dedicated service to Texas Tech. The TTAA established the New Faculty Awards program in 1987 to recognize outstanding new members of the faculty in each college and the School of Law. Congratulations, Erin!

Associate Professor Dr. Sina Mostafavi and Assistant Professor Dr. Asma Mehan will have an exhibit on display at the Biennale Architettura 2023 in Venice, Italy, from May 20th through November 26th, 2023. The exhibition showcases their research in design computation fabrication and urban community development and will feature an augmented reality layer to the installation. This layer will map the data related to socio-environmental justice in Amsterdam and Houston. Over 60 individuals from Texas Tech as well as external collaborators and industrial partners from the US and the EU, will be involved in this project.

The 2022 Presidential Departmental Excellence in Safety Award has been awarded to Jeff Hoover, facilities director; Hinton Vick, unit manager; and the Huckabee College of Architecture!
The review committee was impressed by the college's continued dedication to improving the safety procedures and infrastructure needed to support our scholarly mission. The HCOA's efforts to provide safer, more secure spaces for our students, while increasing the rigor of shop trainings to create more competent architects was commended. Funding in the amount of $25,000 has been awarded to the college for this achievement.
