June 2023 eGam
A monthly newsletter about the latest happenings in the Williams-Mystic community, for alumni and friends of the program.

On June 2, community members, alumni, friends and staff gathered to celebrate the life of chanteyman and WM skills instructor Don Sineti. The Dogwatch for Don was a joyous evening filled with touching stories, rousing chanteys and great company. This event made it clear that Don’s legacy will live on not just through his music, but through the lives of those he touched during his time at the Seaport.
Thank you to all of the event’s performers, organizers, and to everyone who has supported Don and his family.

A Coincidental Appalachian Trail Encounter

The best part about being a Williams-Mystic alum is that you never know when you may run into one. In this case, Rob Leary F81 and Maggie Stack F09 happened to meet up on the Appalachian Trail, bonded over their mutual interest in maritime history, and learned that they were both WM alums!

Save the Date: Alumni Day

Please join us in Mystic for Alumni Day on September 23 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.!
This year, our annual alumni gathering will feature a brand new format and new activities. We invite you for a day filled with adventure, camaraderie, and the spirit of giving back. Alumni Day 2023 will include:
- The chance to join Williams-Mystic alumni, faculty, and staff for fun volunteer work projects in support of the program.
- Exclusive gallery talk by Krystal Rose (Curator of Collections) and Dr. Jim Carlton (Williams-Mystic Director Emeritus) about Oceanus, the museum's compelling new exhibit that uses art to inspire conversations and awareness around critical ocean issues. Krystal and Jim collaborated with the artist on the content & inspiration for the exhibit at the Mystic Seaport Museum.
- Opportunities to explore and enjoy Mystic Seaport, and socialize and network with fellow alumni.
Alumni Day is organized and provided at no cost to you. In order to keep costs low and Alumni Day accessible to all, there will not be an evening dinner provided. There will be an informal BYO lunch on the Green. Afterward, we encourage alumni to gather with us for a late afternoon Dogwatch social hour with a program update, and then depart or organize your own adventure for the evening. Registration information will be coming soon by email!
The bonds forged in Mystic are enduring. We hope you will return to Mystic this year to engage with the people and places we hold dear and to make new connections for the future.

June Celebrations: Pride Month and Juneteenth

This month, Mystic Seaport Museum hosted a series of events in honor and recognition of Juneteenth National Independence Day, and also sponsored Mystic’s Pride Week celebrations.
On Sunday, June 11, Mystic Seaport collaborated with Discovering Amistad to honor African American culture, featuring live music, artisan vendors, a keynote lecture, and tours of the Amistad. On June 19, the Museum presented “Harriet Tubman: Woman With a Railroad,” a one-woman show that told the story of Harriet Tubman and her struggle for freedom and inclusion post-Civil War. The show was written and performed by Adwoa Bandele-Asante, the founder of P.E.A.C.E. Works Group LLC, who was born and raised in New London.
The month of June is also LGBTQI+ Pride Month, a month-long celebration and commemoration of the impacts made by members of this community toward inclusion and equality around the world. We affirm and celebrate the many members of our Williams-Mystic community who identify as members of the LGBTQI+ community.
One of WM’s educational hallmarks is that the world is interdisciplinary, and the ocean connects us all. Our freedom, equality and justice are interconnected. As we continue to grow as a program, we recognize that there will always be work that needs to be done to make our campus and curriculum more inclusive, and to tell a more truthful and vibrant maritime story that includes voices that history has not always amplified.
While no single month can fully recognize the beauty and resilience of an entire culture, nor can legislation alone heal the wounds of systemic injustice, there is truth in being recognized, seen, honored, and empowered. The month of June can represent a commitment to resiliency and hope. We are thankful to the members of the WM community who continue to raise our awareness and we celebrate all of you.

See the Cramer in Boston!

The Sea Education Association is holding an open ship event aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer on Tuesday, July 11 between 3-6 p.m. at the John J. Moakley Courthouse Fan Pier in Boston. This is a great opportunity for alums who would like to reconnect with the Cramer crew, reminisce about their offshore voyage, or learn more about SEA's ocean-focused programs!
The event will be held rain or shine. Please note that current SEA protocols require participants to wear masks below deck to protect the crew and upcoming programs.
