Welcome to Duke!

Valerie Ashby, Dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, celebrates Move-In Day with First-Year Advisory Counselors (FACs) on East Campus
Move-In Day is right around the corner! We wanted to spend some time reviewing everything you need to know before arriving and settling your student in at Duke.
On Tuesday, August 20 students will unload their belongings at their building during a block of time designated for their building. The designated move-in times are:
8:00am – 9:00am: Trinity, Jarvis
9:30am – 11:00am: Gilbert-Addoms, Brown, Alspaugh, Wilson
11:30am – 1:00pm: Randolph, Southgate, Giles, Bassett
2:00pm – 3:30pm: Pegram, Blackwell, Bell Tower
Please note that there is road construction in the city of Durham that may impact your journey on Move-In Day. Be sure to check traffic maps and plan accordingly before embarking for East Campus.

Arrival and Unloading

When you pull up to your student’s residence hall, you will be greeted by First-Year Advisory Counselors (FACs) who will help unload your vehicle. Please label all of your student’s belongings with their name and room number to ensure belongings get to the correct place.

Vehicles and Parking Passes

The Move-In Day Parking Pass (also called Move-in Placecard) was sent to your student's Duke e-mail in late July. This must be displayed while on East Campus during move-in. Please ensure that your student has this pass before departing for Durham.
Each family is permitted ONE vehicle on East Campus during your student's assigned move-in window. To ensure efficient traffic flow on Move-In Day, please use the entrance indicated on your pass.  Once you are on campus, Duke community members will help direct traffic.
Once unloaded, your car must be moved to the Science Drive parking deck on West Campus. Directions will be provided from the residence hall to the parking deck. Shuttles are available to bring you back to East Campus from the parking deck.
A parking pass is not necessary for the Science Drive deck. This lot should be used during the move-in process if your family has more than one car on campus and while on West Campus during Parent and Family Orientation (August 20-21).

Orientation

Parent and Family Orientation

Stay after move-in to learn more about your student’s home for the next four years! You will have the opportunity to meet other Duke families, current Duke students, and many members of Duke’s faculty and staff.
We politely ask that you follow the Parent and Family Orientation schedule and depart campus at the end of the program so that FACs and Duke staff can finish orienting your student.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation begins on Move-In Day and lasts up until the first day of classes. Orientation is a valuable time for your Duke student to connect with classmates, navigate campus, and learn about how to excel at Duke. Highlights include a meeting with their academic advisor or college dean, New Student Convocation, Night at the Nasher, and a night at Durham Performing Arts Center to discuss the summer reading book with author Tommy Orange.

DPAC

We are still accepting DPAC applications for Class of 2023 Parent Representatives! The Duke Parents Advisory Council (DPAC) plays an important role within the University by providing feedback, support, and counsel throughout the academic year. DPAC applications are due September 1.
