Welcome Families!

Dear Parents and Families,

First, to the parents and families of the Class of 2027, welcome to the Duke Family! Though many of you live across the country and worldwide, you are an essential part of this community, and we welcome you. To the returning parents and families, welcome to the 2023-2024 academic year.
The team of New Student and Family Programs (NSFP) believes that a supportive network of family and friends at home is valuable to the success of Duke students. As part of our commitment to fostering an inclusive and informed community among new Duke students and families, the Office of New Student and Family Programs will provide these monthly newsletters highlighting the many resources and opportunities available to your students. This resource will help you encourage and support them from wherever you are.
We will also use this newsletter to highlight special invitations to you as families, such as an invitation to Family Weekend 2023, which is soon approaching! This exciting weekend will be held  November 3-5 and is an excellent opportunity for you to visit your student and learn more about the Duke experience. Check the Family Weekend website for details and the registration site. We hope to see you in Durham!
On behalf of the Duke community, thank you for the many ways you support your student and our university.

Important Information:
Be Vigilant of Scammers

It has been brought to our attention that Duke parents have received calls from individuals fraudulently identifying themselves as Duke Police officers and soliciting money from parents. The caller states that the student has been arrested and then instructs the parents to pay bail through CashApp, Venmo, or Zelle. The caller has been using a phone number and/or caller ID that makes the number they are calling from appear to be Duke Police.
Please be advised that Duke Police will never call and ask for bail money. Anyone with additional information should contact Duke Police's non-emergency line: 919-684-2444.

Family Advice:
From Housing and Residence Life
As adults, we know that conflicts and disagreements are expected even in the strongest relationships. As a parent or family member, you may have heard from your student about their overall roommate experience, things they do or don’t like about them, and even potential roommate conflicts. While it may feel natural to want to intervene on your student’s behalf, this is an excellent opportunity to support your student in learning how to address and resolve conflict independently!
Read more from Housing and Residence Life about the roommate agreement process and how you can best support your student through roommate conflicts.
