PRESIDENT RELEASES FY 27 BUDGET REQUEST
This morning, President Donald Trump released his budget request for the 2027 fiscal year. The blueprint proposes a historic $1.5 trillion defense budget, while cutting non-defense discretionary programs by 10 percent. The budget prioritizes investments in certain areas, including artificial intelligence, quantum and critical minerals to “ensure the United States remains on the cutting edge of these critical technologies’ development and responsible use."Â
As for specific priorities of interest to Duke, the FY 27 topline numbers are:Â
National Institutes of Health - $41 billion (13 percent below FY 26)
- Proposes to eliminate the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Fogarty International Center and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
National Science Foundation - $4 billion (54 percent below FY 26)
- Proposes to eliminate the Social, Behavioral and Economics Directorate.
DOE Office of Science - $7.3 billion (13 percent below FY 26)
- Proposes to create a new Office of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum and recommends $1.2 billion in funding for seven AI supercomputers at Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories.
NASA Science - $3.8 billion (47 percent below FY 26)
Department of Education - $76.5 billion (2.9 percent below FY 26)
- The budget request maintains the maximum Pell Grant Award at $7,395, but cuts the Federal Work Study program to $123 million, about a 90 percent decrease.Â
National Endowment for the Humanities - $38 million (82 percent below FY 26)
- Proposes to eliminate the NEH.
As a reminder, the budget request is mostly a wish list for the White House, and Congress will spend the coming weeks and months developing appropriations bills that align with its own priorities. The Office of Government Relations will provide more updates and resources as the White House provides more information. In the meantime, please see the graphic below for a quick overview of the congressional appropriations process.
