Dear NY Friends,
2015 already?! Kind of amazing how time flies and that old adage I've heard time and again proves true - the days are long, but the years are short. Usually it's an older person telling me that with reference to my scrambling children in line at Target or the supermarket, touching everything in sight, calling "mommy mommy mommy". The older person seems to sense the build-up of my frustration and they whip out that gem. I am loathe to admit that most times I just smile and nod, and internally role my eyes as I try to corral my monkeys long enough to pay and Get.Out.
But then I have a few (rare) moments to think and that old addage comes slamming back - each time my kids lose a tooth, learn something new, make a friend outside of our own circle proving they do, in fact, have their own lives. It hits me when I do the math and realize how long I have been out of college (15 years) or worse, when someone mentions our 20th high school reunion - and I realize it is just one.year.away.
These moments shock me into a state of gratitude, one that generally is seen around the holidays but one which I try to seek out the other 10 months of the year. I'm grateful for the life I have, for the family and friends that I have - for however long I have them. Sometimes that's far too short, but it makes each memory that much sweeter.
I would encourage you to take a moment to reflect on how short the years are, despite those sometimes looooong days. Because as the incomparable philosopher Ferris Bueller reminds us, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
Happiest of New Years!

Fourth and Fifth Grade
Girls Leadership offers two workshops for this age group.
Say How You Feel. Ask For What You Need. Fourth and fifth grade are often the years in which girls experience significant shifts in their self-confidence and increasing social pressures to conform. It is this transitional age where girls' voices tend to become silenced. Parents and daughters will practice using the skills of assertive self-expression through activities, discussion, and paired scenarios. The workshop gives girls and parents the opportunity to have fun, to bond, and to work together to explore the importance of healthy and productive conflict. (90 minutes)
