Angela’s Tips for Advancing Your Career
Embrace failures.
Failure is part of success, period. Michael Jordan said, "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I've been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed." Don’t be afraid to try something new, to be uncomfortable. Fear is what holds you back. Pushing through the failures is how you get to the “a-ha” moments.
Invest in yourself.
Once I realized I was supported by my manager to grow and develop in my career, I decided for myself that I needed to take action and enhance my skills. Don’t wait for your manager or supervisor to offer you training. Realize your worth and take time to invest in yourself. I decided to go back to college to finish my degree. It was the trial of my life, but worth it! My daughter was in school at the same time and we often commiserated over our finals while encouraging each other to keep going.
Be courageous.
Often just making a decision is important. Be courageous and confident. Speak up if you think something needs to be said. You’d be surprised how often people are relieved when someone says what others want to say but are hesitant.
