Dean Reddy’s Tips for CreativityUCSF School of Dentistry Dean Michael Reddy visited the FAS Manager’s Town Hall to thank FAS staff for helping make their goals possible and share some inspirational tips for creativity. At the School of Dentistry, they are being creative by re-thinking their curriculum, investing in new kinds of research, and integrating oral health into overall health. - Creativity is looking at the world from a different perspective and seeing an opportunity.
- “Flip the script” on your perspective and practice “vujà dé”—when you are in a situation you’ve been in a thousand times before, but it’s like you’re there for the first time.
- Embrace flaws and failures, because it’s a critical part of the learning, growing and achieving success.
- You are more creative than you think. Leverage the power of thinking versus our tendency to jump to immediate action. Use an “original thinker” mentality versus an “immediate doer” mentality.

SVC Paul Jenny's Updates Senior Vice Chancellor Paul Jenny recently provided an update of current happenings that impact FAS and UCSF: What's Happening with UC’s Budget
Governor Newsom issued his first budget proposal in early January, including a 6.9% increase to the University’s permanent base budget and $155 million for one-time funding. Although generous, UC remains short due to last year’s one-time funding to pay for a tuition increase and enrollment growth. The Governor’s proposal is the first step in the process with a deadline of June 30 to reach an agreement. What's Happening with HR Leadership Recruitment
The UCSF Chief Human Resources Officer position opening is posted and recruitment has officially begun.
Update on Two FAS 2019 Strategic Priorities - Parnassus Revitalization – UCSF is committed to the revitalization of the Parnassus Heights campus, which is vital for the success and reputation of UCSF as a whole. FAS plays a critical role, currently through our Real Estate team leading the development of the Comprehensive Parnassus Heights Plan (CPHP), projected to be complete in June 2019. This will serve as an aspirational framework to guide decision-making going forward, similar to the 1999 Mission Bay Master Plan. All are welcome to attend an April 24 Revitalization of Parnassus Town Hall to get an early glimpse of the CPHP (more details at bottom).
- Value Improvement –Many of you have been doing process improvements in your areas for years, bringing additional value to your customers. Our Value Improvement initiative is a focused effort to gather ideas from across FAS about how to increase value, invest in developing people to implement projects/experiments, and measure our results toward increasing our capacity to serve the growing UCSF enterprise.

True North ProgressTrue North is our compass for how FAS delivers on the UCSF mission of caring, teaching healing and discovering. Here are updates on a few of our metrics:
Staff Engagement Survey: The Gallup staff engagement survey is a metric we use to gauge our progress in creating an optimal work experience for Our People. The next survey will be April 30 through May 25 with results expected in early June.
FAS Internal Hiring Rate: Our People want opportunities to learn and grow. We have a True North metric to track the percent of FAS positions filled by UCSF staff. For the first seven months this fiscal year, our internal hiring rate is 28% which is a four percentage point improvement over FY18.
FAS Customer Satisfaction Index: Good news! As of Q3 FY19, FAS has improved our average FAS customer satisfaction index by 4 points! Of the 59 core services we measure, 47 or 80% have improved year-to-date. Keep up the great work!

We are on Track
Good news! As of January 2019, we are on target to our FY19 financial plan. Our focus for next year is accuracy in planning.
It is budget season! Departments are working hard to prepare their five-year financial projections and business plans.

Keeping UCSF Safe Being part of a large, complex organization means we are often the target of criminals and those who seek to take advantage of us. But there’s much we can do to help avoid crimes before they happen. UCSF Police Department leads investigations for crimes at UCSF. We can help avoid crimes before they happen. Often, employees are the first line of defense, noticing when something seems “off” and isn’t right. If you encounter something that doesn’t seem right at work, tell your supervisor or call the UCSF Police Department.
Cybersecurity is another area where employees’ actions can help keep our sensitive data safe. UCSF IT's new security software has drastically reduced the number of successful cyber attacks, which means fewer expensive, embarrassing incidents and fewer interruptions for the UCSF community. If you use your own computer for UCSF business, make sure you install BigFix so we can keep your computer secure and up-to-date. See IT’s Security page to make sure you’re up on the latest about password changes, cyber training, and other requirements.

UCPath Behind the Scenes UCSF is preparing for December's transition to UCPath, the University of California’s single system for payroll, benefits and human resources. HR, IT, Finance and PMO have an integral role in the change effort. Recently, several FAS staff went behind the scenes to the UCPath Center in Riverside and to see UCPath in action at UCLA. The UCPath Center visit at Riverside inspired our staff, especially meeting support team colleagues that are dedicated to the success of the project. We were also encouraged by the UCLA visit, where UCPath has already been implemented. UCSF is learning much from other UCs as they transition, and we’ll be able to leverage the lessons learned as other campuses work out their kinks. The systems improvements UCSF has already completed (such as moving to one timekeeping system) should make our implementation a bit smoother.
