Alden Robert ’23
For Alden Robert ’23, creating an environmentally sustainable campus involves a lot more than recycling, but it’s a place to start. The religious studies and international political economy major is the student manager for Sustainability Services and oversees the students who collect, sort, and transport all of Puget Sound’s recycling output. It’s an uphill battle, even for a campus with a commitment to environmental justice, and it’s been eye-opening for Robert to examine his own habits through the lens of sustainability.

HACKS & CHOPS Associate Professor of Biology Mark Martin recently appeared on the American Society for Microbiology podcast This Week in Microbiology. “I just adored the #OMG (overwhelming microbial greatness) paper I discussed,” Martin says. The paper explores “how a marine cyanobacterium can generate oxygen AND fix nitrogen at the same time!”

Last week, Puget Sound began administering the National Assessment of Collegiate Campus Climates (NACCC), a survey about the racial climate on our campus, in support of our commitment to becoming an anti-racist institution. Survey links were sent to students and full-time staff members on March 8. (Faculty members will be surveyed next year, when that NACCC survey becomes available.)

Students and staff members, please check your @pugetsound.edu email for your custom link to your confidential survey, which takes about 15 minutes to complete. Completed surveys are sent directly to NACCC.

SAY CHEESE Joey Moroso ’22 poses for a portrait during Grad Fair 2022. Her mom really wanted her to get an official photo taken, she says. Planning to take a gap year after graduation later this spring, Moroso has her sights set on pursuing her master’s degree. Grad Fair was hosted over two days at the beginning of the month to give graduating students a one-stop shop to do everything they need to be ready for Commencement.
