Vinous South Africa Report by Neal Martin
Kanonkop achieved some excellent scores in the latest Vinous South Africa Report by famed UK-based wine critic, Neal Martin. This report was released in October and we are happy to share his comments and thoughts on our current wines.
The Black Label Pinotage 2017 and Paul Sauer 2016 are some of the highest scoring wines in the report.
In the words of Mr Martin himself: ‘That’s all I want to say. Read the reviews. Treat yourself. Order a few bottles. Don’t deny yourself. Yes, those prices are a fraction compared to other wine regions, as the Cape continues to offer unbeatable quality combined with affordability.’
Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2016 – 96 points
The 2016 Paul Sauer is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc matured for 24 months in 100% new oak. It has a supremely well defined bouquet of pure blackberry, boysenberry and violet aromas, the oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, perfectly pitched acidity and a caressing texture. This was actually tasted after a fantastic 1994 Paul Sauer was opened the previous night; who is to say that it will not age as well over the next quarter-century? Not only is this a superb wine, but it surely represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in the world.
Kanonkop Pinotage Black Label 2017 – 96 points
The 2017 Black Label Pinotage is the estate's premium label, this vintage matured for 16 months in 100% new oak. It has a marvelous bouquet of beautifully defined blackberry and raspberry fruit, touches of mint and fennel emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, a smooth texture and a fresh, tensile finish. This cool, calm and collected Pinotage should age with panache. Stunning.
Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 – 92 points
The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon has a perfumed bouquet of black currant, blueberry and touches of cedar/pine cones; the oak is nicely integrated here. The medium-bodied palate features sappy red fruit and an undercurrent of salinity that imparts a subtle marine influence toward the composed finish. Classy.
Kanonkop Pinotage 2017 – 91 points
The 2017 Pinotage has a lovely nose of baked black cherries, black currants, Indian ink and hints of orange blossom, all pure and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, well-pitched acidity and an elegant finish that Pinotage skeptics ought to taste in order to change their minds. This is how to do commercial/quality Pinotage.

KANONKOP – THE MAKING OF A LEGEND, by Emile Joubert
The story of Kanonkop has for thefirst time been documented with the publication of Kanonkop: The Making of a Legend. This 200 page hard-cover collector’s item is a full colour book chronicling the history of the wine estate from the tenure under its founder, Paul Sauer, who inherited the property in 1929, through the nine decades during which Kanonkop has become recognised as the Cape’s leading wine producer.
Sumptuously illustrated with photography from today and the years gone-by, this book tells the story of the estate’s winemakers, the Krige family-owners and those working in the winery and the famous vineyards set on the Simonsberg mountain. Vineyards, soils and wines are given a voice in a narrative aiming to offer the reader a glimpse of the various elements that have given Kanonkop its formidable reputation as a premium wine brand with an international reputation for quality and true excellence.
This book is available for sale at the tasting room at R495.00 (it can also be sent by courier country-wide at R135 (main centres) or R160 (regional areas)). It is also available at the following Pick n Pay stores: V&A Waterfront and Constantia (Western Cape) and On Nicol (Gauteng).

The moment you bring this wine to your nose you know it is Paul Sauer. Upfront, intriguing layers of cassis, tea leaves, cigar box and cedarwood notes are followed by a palate packed with ripe dark fruit, Christmas spice, seamless tannins and a long, savoury finish. The nose is complex and layered, showing cedar wood, tea leaves, gentle spice, hints of savoury tomato, pencil shavings and deep blackcurrant notes. The palate is multifaceted, rich, full bodied, with wonderful balance between fruit, oak, acidity and tannins. A lingering finish completes a truly typical Stellenbosch Cabernet. Very long ageing potential, but delicious to drink already.
