In the month of February, we marked the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking. The Sundanese nun Josephine Bakhita is the Patron Saint of Human Trafficking Victims. Kidnapped into slavery as a child by Arab traffickers in the late 19th century, she was converted to Islam and left in the care of the Canossian Sisters in Italy. She was eventually freed and lived out her life as a Catholic and eventually a nun. Saint Josephine was canonized in 2000, and is a shining ray of hope for human trafficking victims and an inspirational demonstration of how victims can recover from their trauma and become whole again.
