Employer Spotlight: GTM Architects

Each year, Commuter Connections (part of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments) recognizes companies around the Washington region who are doing great things for their employees to help them get out of their cars and onto transit or into carpools and telework with their yearly Employer Recognition Awards.

At this year's ceremony, held yesterday, Downtown Bethesda company GTM Architects was given an honorable mention!

GTM Architects offers numerous programs and perks to encourage their employees to get out of their cars and keep things good and green! The company provides a parking and transit pre-tax benefit program, encourages carpooling to project sites, offers teleworking to all via VPN connections, and celebrates bike to work day every spring.

Commuter Connections recognized three Montgomery County employers: the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), GEICO, and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), with awards for their incentives, marketing, and telework programs, respectively.

Elrich Unveils County Climate Plan

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich unveiled Montgomery County's Climate Action Plan in a ceremony held on Wednesday, June 23 in Downtown Wheaton.

The plan is being heralded at one of the "Most ambitious in the nation" and outlines 86 "Climate Actions."

The Climate Actions for transportation include:

Transitioning to 100% zero emissions transportation along with expanding supporting infrastructure
Providing clean, efficient, frequent, and reliable public transit
Reducing use of personal automobiles and increasing use of transit and active transportation options like biking, walking, and micromobility services with safe, supportive infrastructure and land use, along with greater use of transportation demand management to achieve trip reduction
Introducing new technologies and approaches to transition to a green transportation system

Updates from WMATA

Last week, the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) began testing new faregates at six "pilot stations."

The stations with the new gates are:

Clarendon
Dunn Loring
Gallery Place
Glenmont
Waterfront
West Falls Church

After the testing is completed, installation of the new gates will begin systemwide "as early as next month," and will include "enhanced safety features, larger displays, and faster processing that will make passing through the gates quicker and easier," according to WMATA's p ress release.

Also last week, WMATA announced that they will be running additional trains on Independence Day.

"On Sunday, July 4, Metrorail service will operate from 8 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. During the day, trains will run on a regular weekend schedule, (every 12 minutes on the Red Line and every 15 minutes on all other lines) until 4 p.m., at which time service will ramp up to rush-hour service levels or better before and after the fireworks. Trains will run every 6 minutes on the Red Line, every 8 minutes on the Orange Line and every 12 minutes on all other lines from 4 p.m. until closing."
