July 4, or Independence Day, celebrated the passage of the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, marking the birth of the nation. The first draft was proposed by John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. All over the United States there are celebrations in honor of this historic moment in our nation's history.

We celebrate and honor the many contributions and diverse ancestry of those who founded this country and fought for its independence.

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month to bring awareness to the unique struggles regarding mental illness that racial and ethnic minority communities face in the United States.

In July 2022 the country transitioned to 988 as the easy-to-remember number to reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (Lifeline) creating an unprecedented opportunity to expand and strengthen crisis care nationwide. “988” is the three-digit, nationwide phone number to connect directly to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers 24/7 access to trained counselors who can help anyone experiencing mental health-related distress.

Seton Hall University is committed to the health and well-being of our campus community. Students have access to crisis intervention services 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Students with an urgent need to speak with a counselor may choose to drop-in to CAPS during regular office hours or call 973-761-9500 or the SHU 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Hotline at 973-275-HELP (4357). to speak with a crisis counselor. Employees have access to the Employee Assistance Program [EAP].

National Disability Independence Day commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, 1990. The ADA provides protection from employment discrimination as well as better access to goods, services, and communications for people with disabilities.

- Disability Support Services (DSS) provides accommodations to students who have had a 504 plan, IEP plan previously in high school for a disability. Having prior accommodations is not a requirement.
Students need to submit an online self-identification form, submit documentation, and have an intake meeting. South Orange & Nutley campus students please register here. -
The Philosophy of Disability: Equity, Justice and Health Podcast can be found on the SHU library website. In this episode, Seton Hall faculty member Dr. Bryan Pilkington speaks with Dr. Joel Reynolds, Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Disability Studies at Georgetown University, Senior Research Scholar in the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Senior Bioethics Advisor to and Fellow of The Hastings Center, and Faculty Scholar of The Greenwall Foundation. Dr. Reynolds is especially concerned with the meaning of disability, the issue of ableism, and how philosophical inquiry into each might improve the lives of disabled people and the justness of practices in medicine, science, politics, and law.

- The Meadowland Park Conservancy, along with South Orange Village, is bringing a star-spangled extravaganza to town on July 1 at 6 p.m. at Flood’s Hill.

Verona will hold its fireworks display on Wednesday, July 2 at the Verona Community Center (Liberty Field, off Whiterock Road). Activities including a DJ, dancing and entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. The fireworks show will begin at dark.

Belleville will have its Independence Day celebration on Thursday July 3 at the Municipal Stadium at 6pm

Bloomfield is holding an Independence Day celebration at Foley Field on Friday, July 4 as part of its "Summer of Fun" events. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with amusements, face painting, food vendors and live music. The fireworks show will begin at 9:30 p.m.
- The Montclair Fourth of July Parade & Picnic starts at 11 am and the town festival to follow.

Livingston will have its annual July 4th fireworks display on Friday, July 4, which will also include a family friendly “community day” beforehand. The day-long festivities are mainly held on and around Memorial Oval (Robert Harp Drive), with special events at Northland Recreation Center (3 Madison Court). Events begin at 9 a.m. and end with a 9 p.m. fireworks display.
- The Paramus Independence Day Parade begins at 9 a.m.
- Oceanfest is a large, family-friendly event with live music, food, crafts, and fireworks in Long Branch.

State Fair Meadowlands offers rides, shows, food, and fireworks on both July 3rd and 4th.
- A fireworks display will be held at North Branch Park in Bridgewater.

Summit's Fourth of July Celebration includes amusement rides, food trucks, a flag raising ceremony, a children's parade, and live music.

West Caldwell plans a fireworks display in West Essex on Friday, July 4 at James Caldwell High School (Bonnel Field), 265 Westville Avenue in West Caldwell. Gates open at 7 p.m., and fireworks begin at dusk.

Fireworks are displayed every Friday night in the summer at Wildwoods Boardwalk including July 4th.

- July 14: Bastille Day commemorates the unity of the French people during the French Revolution.
- July 18: The U.N. General Assembly declared July 18 as “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the contributions toward peace and freedom made by the former South African President.
