Tackling Military Leadership

Jeffrey J. Matthews knows leadership. As the George F. Jewett Distinguished Professor in the School of Business and Leadership, he has spent most of his career on the subject. His new book, Generals and Admirals, Criminals and Crooks: Dishonorable Leadership in the U.S. Military (Notre Dame Press, 2023), is an investigative meditation on military leadership gone wrong. We caught up with Matthews to ask what we can all learn from these high-profile failures.

Vice President for Institutional Equity & Diversity Lorna Hernandez Jarvis will speak at the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE) on March 14. Alongside co-presenters from at Lewis & Clark College, Whitman College, and Willamette University, Hernandez Jarvis’ presentation, titled "Mas Fuertes Juntos/Stronger Together," will examine how chief diversity officers at private colleges can build persistence and community.

Unveiling the Power of Words

Acclaimed author Yaa Gyasi, known for her powerful novel Homegoing, joined Tacoma Museum of Glass curator Jabari Owens-Bailey for a sold-out discussion of her work at Schneebeck Concert Hall on March 7. Gyasi, a National Book Foundation "5 Under 35" honoree, explored her writing process and the themes in her work. The event was co-presented by The Museum of Glass, University of Puget Sound’s African American Studies Program and Race & Pedagogy Institute, and the Pierce County Library Foundation, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program.
