The NSDUH and MTF Surveys are useful to policymakers, researchers, practitioners and communities to understand risk factors and substance use behavior and to monitor progress toward national health goals. Study results are also used to monitor trends in substance use, treatment, recovery, and mental health. SAMHSA uses survey data to prepare statistical reports on substance use patterns and trends and further uses the data to identify populations and geographic areas with particular substance use problems so federal resources can be used efficiently for prevention and treatment programs. The science and delivery of prevention programs is supported and guided by these annual surveys, data gathering, and reports.
