Letter from the Vice President Dear Members of the UO Research Community,
There are multiple signs hinting that the UO is on the threshold of a dramatic increase in research productivity, excellence and impact. This gathering wave is not confined to just one school or college or campus. It’s occurring across the entire university.
That was to have been the theme of my Oct. 31 campus presentation on “The State of UO Research,” but the passing of a family member forced me to postpone my talk.
My address is now rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at 3 p.m. in the EMU Crater Lake North and South rooms. I am so excited about it that I want to give you a partial preview. [...]

September and October 2017 Monthly Award Reports

The University received 41 new awards totaling over $14.2 million during September and October.

| The UO Greenhouse Facility features more than 6,000 square feet of greenhouse space and a one-acre field to support research and teaching activities. | |

Elizabeth Hayes became the greenhouse manager in August. Elizabeth has a wealth of experience within research greenhouses and in the field, and has recently received her Bachelor of Science degree in crop science and agronomy from Oregon State University. We are excited to be able to recruit Elizabeth to this position and are looking forward to working with her to support and grow the research and educational activities within the greenhouses.

New Startup Rhithwir Debut
Rhithwir is one of Eugene's latest tech companies and recently debuted at RAIN Eugene's Annual Accelerator Showcase in October. Rhithwir will produce full-immersion virtual reality systems and was co-founded by John Boosinger, University of Oregon Technical Sciences Administration director, and Clifford Dax, electronics shop supervisor
“Innovations that grew out of UO research activity in FY17 continued to support local economic development and helped maintain the state’s role as a leader in emerging industries,” said Chuck Williams, associate vice president for innovation. Innovation tallies from FY17 included the following:
- $8.86 million in licensing revenue
- $7.73 million, or 87 percent, of licensing income was reinvested into academic units, innovators and the state of Oregon
- 11.65 percent return on research through licensing (licensing income divided by research expenditures)
- $200,000 invested in IP (patents)

FY17 Funding News from SPS Annual Report
UO researchers brought in $114.9 million in grants, contracts and other competitive awards during the past fiscal year, with $93.6 million coming from federal funding, which accounted for 81.5 percent of the UO’s total grants, contracts, and awards.

SPS Staffing Updates - Kari Vandergust has transferred to the SPS Award Set-Up Team. Kari brings her experience in pre-award and federal regulations to the team.
- Stephanie Gray has joined the SPS Pre-Award team. Stephanie comes to us from a local non-profit, bringing experience in the full life cycle of sponsored projects.
- Andrew Gutierrez has joined our SPS Post-Award team. Andy recently moved here from Michigan Tech, bringing experience in sponsored fellowships and higher education.
- Ashley Boehme is our newest hire, and will be supporting Sponsored Projects Services as our Office Specialist. Ashley also brings experience in higher education administration to her new role at SPS.

Updates to Electronic Forms and Educational Opportunities
SPS is making changes: - We are transitioning our standard forms to online forms for convenience and streamlined routing.
- We are participating in the transition from Making Tracks/ODT to My Tracks for educational opportunities.

Updates to Federal Policy on Human Subjects
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and 16 other federal departments and agencies have adopted revised regulations surrounding the protection of human research participants. The new final rule goes into effect Jan. 19, 2018. Stay tuned for updates on the revised regulations.

UROP Recipients Featured in fall issue of CASCADE Magazine
Presidential Undergraduate Research Scholars Begin Program Year
The third cohort of the Presidential Undergraduate Research Scholars, a program coordinated in collaboration between the Richmond Science Group and the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, began their year of research on Sept. 25. The program emphasizes engaging students in research that are from populations underrepresented in these fields. For more information about the program visit http://urop.uoregon.edu/purs.
