Game-Changing Data Partnership

When it comes to measuring results, metrics are only as good as the available data. In the world of workforce development, collecting follow-up data from participants is challenging and returns patchy, limited information. Tipping Point is breaking new ground when it comes to tracking outcomes, in partnership with California Employment Development Department (EDD) and our employment grantees, starting with Opportunity Junction. Read our conversation with Jamie Austin, Senior Director of Impact + Learning, about this partnership and its implications for measuring and improving outcomes going forward.

Spotlight on Need

Three months have passed since the North Bay fires hit, and we have moved from funding immediate relief efforts to investing in recovery initiatives, identifying three critical needs:
  • Housing: Renters were particularly hard hit, both due to loss of homes and from evictions. In Sonoma County over 80% of the FEMA applicants with “unmet” needs were renters. Rental costs have increased over 10% since October, and with very few vacancies since the fires, many renters cannot find affordable housing.
  • Employment: Sudden loss of employment in the service sector and loss of wages in the wine industry during the weeks of the fires have disproportionately impacted hourly workers. The agriculture and hospitality industries employ about 20,000 workers across Sonoma County.
  • Mental Health: The trauma of the fires will have long-term impacts on the region. School officials have reported increased signs of stress among students who evacuated or lost homes, and those in families who have lost jobs or who are in fear of losing housing.

Spotlight on Relief Fund Grantee

Tipping Point Emergency Relief Fund grantee, UndocuFund, is the only organization in Sonoma Country focused exclusively on fire relief for the undocumented population, and provides direct financial assistance to undocumented immigrants impacted by the fires. To date, UndocuFund has disbursed almost $2.6 million to over 1,100 families. Tipping Point's grant will provide funding for additional operational capacity and direct financial assistance for more families and individuals impacted by the fires.
