| Twenty-five years ago, a group of conservationists met in Katoomba, Australia to consider ways to harness the power of markets to conserve forests and biodiversity. Established by Forest Trends, the group met 28 times in 16 countries since then, returning to Australia last fall to take stock of their work and the path ahead. There is much to learn from the work of these leaders from academia, the nonprofit and private sector and Indigenous communities as they wrestled with how to deploy human and financial capital for conservation and restoration across the globe. While international in scope, a recent report encapsulates some of their learnings that have relevance for domestic US practitioners as well.
In June, the Conservation Finance Network will celebrate a milestone of our own: the 20th Conservation Finance Boot Camp. Some 40 practitioners from the public, nonprofit and private sectors will gather in New Haven, CT at Yale’s School of the Environment to review the fundamentals of conservation finance and explore key trends and innovations that can drive more strategic and efficient conservation on the ground. They’ll soon join a network of some 700 Boot Camp alumni and thousands more practitioners in the CFN network that are seeking more effective and innovative ways to leverage public and private capital for the conservation of land and natural resources.
As this Earth Day month comes to a close, we celebrate the power of networks to advance collective conservation efforts.
