Third Week of August, Another Solid Week for Independent Grocers
Same-store sales increased 14.43 percent over year-ago. Independent grocers also reported their consumer count for the third week of August was down almost 7 percent compared to the same week in 2019. Every Day, Meat and Product Demand Are Holding Its Own
Fresh produce sales increased 11.5% over year-ago on strong vegetable (+13.5%) and fruit (+9.9%) performances
Fresh produce generated an additional $139 million this week with sales $4.5 billion ahead of 2019 levels year-to-date
Overall produce inflation is mild, but at the category level double-digit inflation and deflation persists
Summer fruits had a solid week, with berries, cherries, and melons in the top 4 in absolute dollar gains
The meat department once more boosted perimeter sales of +10%. Meat increased 16.1% in dollars and 6.7% in volume. Inflation was unchanged at +8.8% over YA
At $89.7 million, additional dollars for beef were more than 4x that of chicken (+ $ 21.8M), followed by pork at + $ 10.0 million. Exotic meats (bison) continues to have the highest percentage gain
With 62% of the year behind us, meat sales have surpassed 77% of 2019 annual sales. Hotdogs have already reached 83% of 2019 sales.
Value-added meat is holding its own, up 29.2% during the pandemic
Seafood was up 28.9% for fresh and 35.4% for frozen
