Students also had the opportunity to get hands-on with STEM in special workshops!
Edwards Air Force Base brought the reality of explosive ordnance disposal right into the hands of students. Students got to see how technology saves lives by driving a bomb disposal robot, trying on a real bomb suit, and interacting with a simulator during this workshop.
What is an electromagnet? The students from X-STEM San Diego could tell you! General Atomics hosted a workshop that let students build a small electromagnet that used different core materials to produce different magnetic strengths. Students got to learn about magnetic materials and see a unique demonstration using magnetic fields to launch normally non-magnetic items, like cucumbers!
General Dynamics NASSCO brought teamwork to life for students in their workshop. Students got work as a group of engineers/planners/builders to learn about fundamentals of engineering used in ship design and experience the various steps involved in modern ship design and construction by designing and building small cargo carrying vessels and measuring their performance. Each team got the chance to compete to build the most efficient (and good looking!) cargo carrying vessels.
Ever wanted to solve your very own Whodunnit? Students at X-STEM San Diego got the chance to do just that with the San Diego Sheriff’s Department! Using forensics and technology, students got to assist the Sheriff’s Department using radio technology, DNA, fingerprinting, and various other forensics and technology to solve a crime.
We all love to play with them, but how are bouncy balls made? The team at CREATE from UC San Diego taught students about the chemistry and exothermic reactions that go into creating bouncy balls! Students got to make their own and even take them home.
Thank you to our wonderful workshop hosts for bringing STEM to life for our X-STEM San Diego students!
