New look for ACBA Sidebar
Notice anything new? We’ve refreshed the look of the ACBA Sidebar e-newsletter. The new, sleek design should make the Sidebar easier to navigate and feature shorter, easier to digest items. Additionally – instead of being tacked on to the end of the Sidebar – listings of upcoming ACBA CLEs are now featured in the new weekly, Sunday night “CLE-Blast” instead of being tacked onto the end of the Sidebar, meaning the newsletter will be focused on other, non-CLE happenings in the legal community. As always, you can view the full calendar of upcoming ACBA CLEs and events online. And, as always, you can view the full calendar of upcoming ACBA CLEs and events.

Coordinate a casual Friday, raise money for back-to-school backpack project
The YLD Public Service Committee is asking all members to wear jeans and/or coordinate a “jeans day” at your firms to raise money for the YLD’s back-to-school Backpack Project. School starts back up at the end of the month, so Friday, Aug. 23 is the recommended day for your firm’s “casual Friday.” The process is simple, just have your firm collect a contribution from everyone who wants to participate. If your firm already has a casual Friday, other options include a pizza day or ice cream party. Last year, the ACBA YLD distributed 476 backpacks filled with school supplies at a food bank distribution, and the goal is to do the same this year with ACBA-wide support.

Market update: Amid declines, there are reasons to be positive
The stock markets have been volatile recently, and declines can be unnerving. Both declines this year involved worries over trade.

There are reasons to be positive:

    • Our economy is strong

    • Corporate profits are healthy

    • The Federal Reserve cut interest rates, which helps
Stocks fell in 2018 because the trade war was heating up and the Fed was raising rates. We may see more market weakness in the coming weeks, but lower prices could be an incentive to make that trade deal. Remember, you always want your long-term financial plan (not day-to-day volatility) to be your guide.
