Southeast Asia still wants to pay with cash, even post-pandemic

Recent data on cash management practices across the region show that cash seems to be rebounding, at least in some economies. The professional accounting body CPA Australia conducts a major regional study of small- and medium-size enterprise (SME) financial behaviour. This annual survey of small business practices across the Asia-Pacific includes a look at the use of cash, and the latest round yielded some arresting results.

Among other things, the survey asks how many firms still receive 50 per cent or more of their income in cash.

Tanzania: Cash Rules in Spite of Mobile Money’s Growth

Cash in circulation is growing in Tanzania, alongside significant progress in terms of financial inclusion and the development of mobile money.

According to the Bank of Tanzania, cash in circulation grew at an annual rate of 9.2% to reach 5.2 trillion Tanzanian shillings (TZS) at the end of June 2021. That growth rate follows a 5.2% increase the previous year.

This growth took place in the context of increasing financial inclusion. The Second National Financial Inclusion Framework aims to ensure broader access to and usage of financial services and aims to increase the share of adults using formal financial assistance to 75% by 2022 from 65% in 2017, says the central bank.

Fintechs fail to make a dent in Mexico as cash remains king

Financial inclusion levels in Mexico have worsened since 2018, official statistics show, despite a burst of financial startups hoping to 'bank the unbanked'.

Mexicans with at least one financial product last year fell 0.5% to 67.8% compared with 2018, the National Inclusion Report (ENIF) concluded this month. Meanwhile, cash still drives 90% of transactions under 500 Mexican pesos ($25), as well as 78.7% of payments or bills over 500 pesos.
