Access for All
In her role as assistant director for Access Programs, Tolu Taiwo helps middle and high school students in Tacoma get on the path to a college education. Her work includes developing the curriculum and hiring teachers for Summer Academic Challenge, Puget Sound’s on-campus STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) experience for grades seven through 12; facilitating off-campus tutoring with the help of two AmeriCorps volunteers; and supporting Access Programs alumni in their transition to college life at Puget Sound. She’s passionate about working with the community and championing opportunities for students of color and low-income or first-generation students to go to college. Beyond campus, Taiwo enjoys Netflix and rollerblading. She’s working on her doctorate from Azusa Pacific University, where her research is focused on Black women educators and activists in South Africa.

HACKS & CHOPS Puget Sound’s online writing resource created and maintained by students and faculty members, Sound Writing, was unanimously recognized by the Small Liberal Arts Colleges Writing Program Administrators (SLAC-WPA) professional organization with its 2021 Martinson Award for Innovation—the organization's highest honor. One nominator praised Sound Writing for covering “a number of important topics often ignored in regular handbooks, such as how to write a resume or a thank-you note, and how to ask a professor for a letter of recommendation.”

Chloe Bouchy ’21 in the Puget Sound Garden

IF YOU GROW IT, THEY WILL COME Pictured here digging up the Puget Sound Garden kale bed, Logger gardener Chloe Bouchy ’21 says: “The campus garden has been a major component of my Puget Sound experience. My love for growing plants and involvement in Garden Club has guided me to lead Garden Practices, a quarter-credit [activity] offered in the spring. I strive to create an inclusive community through which students can learn about the different elements of gardening.” In addition to garden work parties, Bouchy organizes guest speakers to discuss topics such as soil science, pests, and weeds, and is looking forward to longer days and warmer weather in order to do more planting, weeding, composting, and more.
