The Tampa Bay area this year is home to 139 National Merit Semifinalists from 38 high schools, according to a list released Wednesday by the National Merit Scholarship program. They are among 16,000 high school seniors nationwide competing for some 7,600 scholarships worth a total of more than $30 million to be offered in the spring. The process began when these students and about 1.5 million of their peers took the Preliminary SAT as juniors. Their scores were among the highest in their respective states. And, as semifinalists, they represent an elite group — less than 1 percent of high school seniors in the U.S...

‘Major Milestone’ in 23rd Street Flyover Project Completed MyPanhandle.com
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB)– The commute to and from Panama City may be getting a little easier now after a major milestone in the 23rd street flyover project is complete and ready to go. The changes feature an on-ramp that connects those coming from the Port of Panama City to Eastbound US-98. The Florida Department of Transportation says this is an important part of the 23rd Street flyover project. F.D.O.T. spokesperson Ian Satter said it will alleviate traffic in one of the busiest areas of Bay County. “Now there will be a safer and more convenient system at US-98 for people to be able to travel continuously along US-98 and be able to access 23rd street,” Satter said. Satter said that the site is still an active construction zone and workers will still be out there adjusting barrier walls as they prepare to do away with the temporary US-98 road, but the biggest part of the project is done...

The city of Tampa is being awarded $24 million to extend the west portion of Riverwalk North and connect to nearby neighborhoods. The grant is awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant. “This is a transformative project for the City of Tampa that will lead to significant investments in West Tampa and the West River,” said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor. “Not only will the continuation of the Riverwalk on the West side of the river provide safe multimodal transportation choices for pedestrians and commuting cyclists, but it will create a world-class destination for the surrounding new and existing neighborhoods.” The grant will fund completion of the 12.2 mile Riverwalk. The city and local public and private partners have already invested more than $1 billion on parks, housing and office and retail space in the project area. Lloyd’s of London establishes Miami office to support growth across Latin America and Caribbean
Lloyd’s has opened a new office in Miami to act as a centralized hub to support growth across Latin America and the Caribbean. Daniel Revilla, Lloyd’s Regional Head of Latin America and the Caribbean, has established the South Florida office to better serve all Lloyd’s market stakeholders across the region. The Latin American market is a key market for Lloyd’s – the market wrote approximately $1.6 billion of gross written premium from the region last year, accounting for an 8% year-over-year growth.
“Lloyd’s of London is an iconic insurance marketplace. We are excited to welcome them to the South Florida insurance industry community,” said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. “Lloyd’s dedication and commitment to stand ready to help its customers in our community during this difficult time is inspiring and we look forward to the firm’s ongoing support of Florida business.”
In addition to Lloyd’s offices in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, there are more than a dozen service companies and cover holders (local entities with underwriting authority on behalf of syndicates at Lloyd’s) working in the Miami area and writing business across the region.
Lloyd’s believes that the Latin American and Caribbean markets are persistently underinsured, particularly against natural catastrophes. For instance, only 6 percent of losses arising from the 2018 earthquake in Mexico, and only 22 percent of companies impacted by the 2017 earthquake in Chile were covered.
Daniel said: “Insurance helps businesses and communities to manage risks. This is our purpose and it is more relevant today than ever. We are here to help our customers recover from disasters as quickly as possible by paying claims and providing the financial security they need to promote innovation and drive economic growth. I’m excited to establish Lloyd’s first physical presence in Miami and to help build even closer ties with our business partners in Florida and across the Latin America region.”
“Florida provides an outstanding position, geographically and economically, for companies that wish to conduct business internationally as well as domestically,” said Jamal Sowell, Florida Secretary of Commerce. “Lloyd’s decision to pursue a Miami office demonstrates that Florida actively serves the best interests of many markets.”

We Never Forget FDLE PIO
Today is Patriot Day, the day we remember the lives of those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia, and on United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. We also remember the heroism of first responders and ordinary citizens who put themselves in harm’s way to help their fellow Americans.
The terrorists, who received flight training at an aviation school in Florida, were not interested in learning to land an airplane. While their behavior was suspicious at the time, no one questioned their motives.
Let’s take the time today to remember this horrific act of terrorism and know that we all have an important role to play in reporting suspicious behavior. “If You See Something, Say Something®.”

FEMA, Ron DeSantis Showcase $5.8 Billion in Federal Funds to Help Florida Recover From Hurricane Irma Florida Daily
On Thursday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Gov. Ron DeSantis noted that Florida has received more $5.8 billion in federal funds over the past three years to help the Sunshine State recover from Hurricane Irma.
Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm, caused more than 130 deaths in the Caribbean and the U.S. and more than $77 billion in damages.
“Our federal partners have been critical to Florida’s recovery for hurricanes,” said DeSantis. “Rebuilding after Hurricane Irma would not have been nearly as successful without support from FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the National Flood Insurance Program. I look forward to our continued partnership as we remain committed to rebuilding resilient communities for all Floridians..."

Pistachio Proves Turtles Fly Too Florida Aquarium’s Rescued & Rehabilitated Sea Turtle Lands New Home At Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo
Tampa, Fla. – How does a rescued and rehabilitated endangered sea turtle get from The Florida Aquarium in Tampa to Chicago Zoological Society’s Brookfield Zoo in suburban Chicago? It flies of course, thanks to Turtles Fly Too, a national nonprofit organization that engages general aviation pilots, who donate their expertise, aircraft, fuel, and labor in support of endangered species rescue efforts.
Pistachio, an endangered female Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, was brought to The Florida Aquarium in 2012 after being injured by a boat strike off the coast of Cedar Key, FL. After years of care by The Florida Aquarium’s animal care and health experts, Pistachio is now swimming in her new home at the Brookfield Zoo thanks to Turtle Flier Team Member Pilot Brenda Tibbs, who navigated the special mission of flying her from Tampa International Airport to Midway Airport on Wednesday.
“The mission of The Florida Aquarium is to save wildlife, especially the most vulnerable species who, without the aid of conservation organizations like ours, might no longer exist in the natural world,” said Roger Germann, President & CEO of The Florida Aquarium. “Extinction is forever, which is why we remained fiercely committed to providing the best care for Pistachio in order to give her.
