"What we pay attention to grows—this is a hard world, but it is also a world full of love and pleasure. I am of that, attending to and growing that."

Our votes, our time and energy, our wallets. What we direct these to reflect our values, character, and our dreams for the future. Every year we are asked, and—awkwardly—we ask one another to donate to GVSU endowment funds. I have never seen this as giving hard-earned salary to one’s employer. I’ve always chosen to think of it as directing my money to what I value. Our students and our programs are one thing I value, and irrespective of my full-time job to serve and support them, I think our mission is so important that my spouse and I support them financially, too, just as we support elected officials whose positions we favor, and community organizations that advance causes we value.
When we choose to support endowments that help our neediest students, our employer happens to match every dollar. Our annual faculty/staff campaign, as well as the “Day of Giving” reminds us to pay attention to the things that are important to us.

"When I walked into the Brooks College Padnos International Center for my job interview, I was struck by how intensely and immediately I wanted to work there. There were different languages and maps on the walls, photos of students abroad, very cool and international staff and student workers. I loved it. I was so nervous I stammered through the first part of my interview, but they took a chance on an art student with a kind of random interdisciplinary background. It changed my life forever. For the last 12 years I've done work I care about with people I care about. Brooks College is a good place for that, and I'm glad to have been a part of it." - Alissa Lane
