Friends,
It’s been six months since the devastating fires struck the North Bay. All of the survivors suffered shock and unimaginable loss. But we knew it would be a much steeper climb to stability for those who were already struggling to make ends meet.
Because of your generosity, together we have raised over $33 million to support organizations working on the ground for low-income communities. This Tip Sheet is dedicated solely to that work, to give you an update on the latest grantees we’re funding, and the need that lies ahead.
Thank you for coming together to make this work possible.
All my best,
Daniel

Spotlight on Need

North Bay residents were already suffering from a housing shortage before the October 2017 fires, which makes the current rebuilding effort even more urgent. The wildfires destroyed more than 7,000 homes in the North Bay, resulting in a nearly 0% vacancy rate. Hundreds of low-income families working service and agriculture jobs lost their rental housing and income as a result. As of January, there was a six-year waiting list for rent subsidy vouchers (known as Housing Choice), with more than 15,000 applicants in Sonoma County. Homelessness is on the rise, as much as quadrupling in some neighborhoods, and is projected to continue increasing due to the lack affordable rentals.

Spotlight on Relief Fund Beneficiary

The Burbank Housing Stoddard West apartment project will be the first affordable housing project to break ground in the North Bay post-fires. It will provide 50 new affordable multi-family housing units in Napa, offered below market rent to families earning 30%-60% of the area’s median income. It will have a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, with eight of the units accepting Housing Choice vouchers. The Tipping Point Emergency Relief grant came at just the right time, reports Burbank Housing’s CEO Lawrance Florin. “The Fund’s $1.5 million grant filled the revenue gap that resulted from the rise in building costs after the fires and allowed us to move quickly to meet the increased demand for affordable housing for low-income families.”

Spotlight on Fundraising

Moved by the devastation of the fires, Northern California resident, Bonnie Raitt, hosted a benefit concert on March 20 at the Fox Theater to support the Tipping Point Emergency Relief Fund. The sold-out show raised $175,000 for the Fund.
