This month’s District Digest is a bit different from the ones you received in the fall! Many important events are happening at the NSDA right now, so we’re going to switch things up a bit to dive deeper into items you may have seen elsewhere. These items may not require your immediate action, but we want you to be able to share and explain them to your district membership.

Next school year, the NSDA will implement a new Competition and Rules Leadership Committee, which will serve as a standing committee under the Office of the Executive Director. This committee of speech and debate coaches and other members of various speech and debate communities will serve as a decision-making body dedicated to issues that focus on NSDA competitions and rules. This committee will be empowered to establish policies governing NSDA competition rules and event procedures. Learn more about the committee's responsibilities »
A member coach of any age with five years of NSDA coaching experience, who is listed as a member coach of record at an active member school, may become a candidate for election or appointment to the CR Leadership Committee. The NSDA Board of Directors is Changing
|
As the Competition and Rules Leadership Committee takes shape, the NSDA will shift to a 100% appointed Board of Directors of no less than 11 members by August 1, 2026. Like today’s Board, this Board will be composed of coaches, at least one administrator, and other leaders with diverse education and/or nonprofit expertise. The NSDA Board of Directors will appoint a minimum of four active NSDA coach members from active NSDA member schools. Two active NSDA coaches will be appointed in 2024, and those Board members will also serve on the CR Leadership Committee. Candidates seeking appointment to the Board may submit an application for consideration, or be nominated for consideration.

Congressional Legislation Reviewers Needed by February 5
|
Who is the ‘go-to expert’ on Congress in your district? Please encourage them to complete the interest form by February 5 to indicate that they would like to join the Student-Written Congress Legislation Evaluation Committee! We are searching for coaches and volunteers who will review student-written legislation as part of preparation for the 2024 National Tournament. Each reviewer will be asked to review and rank 20 to 30 pieces of legislation in early March. Reviewers should evaluate legislation holistically—taking into consideration the content, formatting, uniqueness, and cultural competency.

Judge Paradigm Review Process and Guide
|
As judges in your area may have noticed, we began 2024 by asking all judges with a Tabroom.com judge paradigm to review and approve their paradigm by February 15. There is a notice on Tabroom.com for all judges with the details. Additionally, we created a resource on how to write a judge paradigm for you to use and share with your district's judges.
Paradigms are meant to be living documents that are reviewed and updated as a person's experience changes. Right now, there are more than 50,000 paradigms in Tabroom.com, many of which have not been reviewed in several years. Paradigms that have not been reviewed by February 15 will be removed until approval has occurred. We encourage you as district leaders to do a district-wide push for updated paradigms that contribute to making students’ debate experience fair, educational, and enjoyable.
