Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
Monthly updates for SFBG Volunteers
Dear Volunteers,
Here we are, another month in COVID-time. In July we welcomed back volunteers for the Member Plant Sale, Plant Arbor, Bean Sprouts, grew our Green Teams, and continued to think about how to safely engage with visitors.
One success for helping visitors enjoy the Garden is through Bean Sprouts Family Days presented by Kaiser Permanente. Twice a week, friendly volunteers (above) welcome families to the Children's Garden, giving tips and tools for exploring the space. Bean Sprouts requires pre-registration, but visitors are welcome to explore the Children's Garden anytime- a great place to point active kids (and parents)!
Green Team
Green Team volunteers and Gardener's Assistants are key to keeping the Garden looking good. We have openings for volunteers on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. If you'd like to volunteer and can commit to participating weekly for at least 4 weeks, let me know and I'll help you get started.
THANK YOU to those who have joined us since June- we love having your positive energy and attention back in the Garden!
Diane
Plant Sale & Arbor
Diane Glaub (pictured above), longtime staff in the Nursery, is now managing the Plant Arbor, which is currently open on Saturdays & Sundays from 10am-3pm.
Thanks to Diane & the supporting volunteers and staff, June's Member Plant Sale was a popular and smooth event, with more than 300 members attending.

Special Events
Since June the Garden has hosted 5 micro-weddings, with many more scheduled through this fall. We are looking for a volunteers who want to support someone's special day as a greeter, helping welcome guests at the Main Gate and guide them to the event site.
The time commitment would be 1-2 hours, on Saturdays. If interested, please email me before August 21.
Interpretation
We are excited to welcome docents and guides back to the Garden in August, as Rovers, to greet and orient visitors. (Ask about the flowering Nikau Palms near the pond :)).

Welcome Tables
We will also be hosting Welcome Tables at the Main Gate, starting on weekday afternoons. We will have a training on Friday, August 21 at 1pm via Zoom.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

A Few More Updates
  • The Garden is hiring a Bookstore Manager. Please help us spread the word and share this job announcement.

  • The library remains closed, but many library resources are available online. We will be following the lead of the SF Public Library system regarding reopening.

  • Horticulturist Diane Schaumleffel retired in July. Diane brought a great deal of skill and experience to the Botanical Garden,  with trees and their care in particular, and continued to hone her craft here for the better part of the past two decades.  We will miss her and wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement!

  • All volunteers will participate in a training before restarting volunteering. In addition to COVID related changes for volunteer safety, there is a new sign-up and check-in system that all volunteers will need to learn.
Wishing everyone the best,

Chloe
