COVID-19 Risks in Pregnancy Increase
Three new studies, utilizing three different data sources, found increased risk for pregnant or recently pregnant people with COVID-19 and their babies, including severe illness, ICU admission, ventilator use, and death; preterm birth and stillbirth; and other pregnancy complications.
- Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) noted an increase in the number of reported deaths in pregnant people.
- A second MMWR suggests the severity of maternal illness affects the risk of stillbirth associated COVID-19.
- A third study found for pregnant people with COVID-19 during the Delta period, the risk of ICU admission was 66% higher, the risk of needing a ventilator or special equipment to breathe was 63% higher, and the risk of death was more than two times higher.
