Kickoff to Summer!

Employment & Meaningful Day Services is already celebrating summer! A cookout was held at Black Hill Regional Park including music, dancing, games, mingling and food courtesy of Catalyst Hot Dogs and Bear's Shaved Ice. Did we mention summer's less than 3 weeks away??

Let's See Those Awards!

Some employees need to dust off their mantels and make room for new hardware! The Arc Maryland's 2025 Statewide Convention & Awards Banquet included some from The Arc Montgomery County being honored. Government Affairs Specialist Chris Leacock (pictured on the left) won "Outstanding Advocate of the Year", Cheryl David (DSP, CLS) earned the "Gilbert John Zucchi Direct Support Professional Award" and Ginny Colten-Bradley was named "Chapter Volunteer of the Year".

In addition, May marked graduation for The Arc Maryland's MCE Leadership Program. Participants selected from state chapters (5 from The Arc Montgomery County, pictured on the right) spent 9 months developing their leadership skills. Kiauna Alston, Carmen Frazier, Linda Kosiorowski, Adam McArthur, Ayoola Oluyomi: congratulations and thank you for your hard work and commitment!

Butterfly in the Sky...

Check out Barbara and her DSP Georgina sitting pretty at Brookside Gardens to see the butterflies! Visitors to this seasonal exhibit (happening now-September 21) get an intimate, up-close look at hundreds of brilliant live butterflies from North America, Central America, South America, Africa, and Asia as they flutter throughout Brookside Gardens’ South Conservatory. Wheelchairs are allowed and there are accessible parking spots. It's recommended to buy tickets ahead of time. They range from $9-$14 and children under 3 are free. Looks like Barbara and Georgina had a great time!

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Take Advantage of Adaptive Recreation at Montgomery Parks!

It is time...to get outside! Experience a fun, accessible evening on the water with Montgomery Park's Adaptive Paddling Program. Available is adaptive kayaking equipment like transfer benches, hand and wrist supports, stabilizing outriggers, and supportive seating systems. Adaptive Paddling is free and is June 26 at 5 pm at Seneca Landing Special Park and there will be more sessions throughout the summer.

Also offered is Adaptive Mountain Biking with handcycle or foot-pedeled trike. This is also free and is happening June 6 at 5 pm. Click here for requirements and more information.

Apple Goes (Even More) Accessible

Apple has unveiled new accessibility features for iPhone, Apple Watch And Mac. The range of new features is wide, but includes Magnifier for Mac - once you’ve connected your iPhone camera (or other compatible camera) to the Mac, it can zoom in on surroundings, such as a whiteboard in a lecture theater. There are currently a lot of labels for apps, but now there will be even more, specifically designed to show what accessibility capabilities are in each app. These will tell users if the app has VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, Reduced Motion, captions and other features. Apple says these new features will arrive before the end of the year.

VRBO Expands Accessibility

Vacation rental platform VRBO is adding 8 new search filters, designed to assist travelers with disabilities. The additional filters now allow users to find vacation rentals that are on a single level, stair-free, or include accessible parking, an accessible pool, handrails in stairways or hallways, an entrance map, an accessible path, or accessible van parking. Furthermore, VRBO has partnered with Becoming rentABLE, a platform focused on improving accessibility in short-term rentals, to encourage hosts to make their properties more accessible.
