Dear Kanonkop Wine Friends
Spring is always a positive time of the year - the air is filled with the glorious scents of blossoms, temperatures are balmy, the vineyards start to bud and new growth is evident all around us.
In many aspects our country’s economy is experiencing a spring phase too, as businesses are starting to emerge from the harsh, cold reality brought about by the many restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and showing renewed energy and growth since we moved to a more relaxed environment in Level 2.
At Kanonkop we are blossoming too, with new vintages of Pinotage, Rosé and Cabernet Sauvignon emerging. We also have a mixed case offer available of this year’s ratings from the Tim Atkin Report, and the art exhibition by Marisa de Jager is back on track.

Tim Atkin MW South Africa Report 2020
| |
|
Well respected international wine journalist and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, has today released his 8th annual report on the South African wine scene. His love, admiration and support for the SA wine industry is palpable, and every year in September, the whole industry waits with bated breath for his ratings to be released. His scores, anticipated by consumers, the trade and media alike, are a valuable measure of quality, and has helped to lift the profile of SA wines in many foreign countries.
Kanonkop's Paul Sauer 2015 will off course be forever remembered as the first South African wine to receive a perfect score of 100 points in his 2018 review.
We are proud to share the ratings on our range, with the Paul Sauer 2017 taking the spoils with a memorable 98 points!

Kadette Pinotage Rosé 2020
Vinification: The grapes were crushed and immediately pressed to prevent too much colour extraction, fermented dry at 13˚C.
Tasting notes: A full bodied, dry style of rosé with a subtle onion skin colour. Inviting aromas of ripe melon, candyfloss, rose water and summer berries are present on the nose. The flavour profile is packed with juicy raspberry and cherry fruit. The bright acidity and delicate nature of this wine makes it fit for any occasion. Ideally served chilled between 8 - 10˚C.
Food Pairing: A perfect accompaniment with seafood dishes like grilled salmon and tuna, sushi and peri-peri prawns. The slight hint of sweetness on the finish lends itself to pair well with spicy dishes and light, aromatic curries too. With spring in the air, our Rosé will add flair to al fresco lunches with salads and quiche.

Pinotage 2018
Vinification: Fermentation took place in open concrete fermenters at 28°C. The cap was punched down manually every 2 hours and the juice was drawn off the skins after 3 days. Matured for 16 months in 225L French Nevers oak barrels – 80% new and 20% 2nd fill barrels.
Tasting notes: Intense purple hues. The nose is beautifully aromatic, with scented aromas of redcurrants, macerated cherries and cinnamon spice. The palate displays a silky tannin structure, backed by a fine seam of acidity. Subtle vanilla undertones from the integrated oak profile are juxtaposed against a fruit explosion of wild bramble, plums and black berries. An elegant wine with lingering flavours of juicy, dark plums on the finish, and a lifting underlying freshness.
Food Pairing: Spicy Asian-style dishes like aromatic curries, biryani or peppered squid served with wasabi, all types of venison meat, seared game fish like tuna or snoek, smoked duck and pulled pork.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2016** available from the cellar door and online from 01/10/20 **
Vinification: Fermentation took place in open concrete fermenters at 29°C. The cap was punched down manually every 2 hours and the juice was drawn off the skins after 5 days. Matured for 24 months in 225L French Nevers oak barrels – 50% new and 0% 2nd fill barrels.
Tasting notes: A classic Simonsberg Cabernet, exuding a sense of coolness in its character despite the warm vintage conditions of 2016. A perfumed nose filled with notes of blackcurrants, fennel, cigar box, tea leaf and “fynbos” shrub. The palate is delicate and fresh, with an austere old-world charm about it. Grainy tannins compliment the earthy profile, with subtle hints of liquorice on the lengthy finish.
Food Pairing: The perfect partner for all types of steak, slow-cooked venison, braised beef short ribs, roasted beet salad, barbequed lamb ribs, rosemary lamb shanks and matured cheddar.
