Through the Lens of Food

As professor and director of the International Political Economy (IPE) program at Puget Sound, Emelie Peine combines tools from sociology, politics, geography, economics, and other social sciences to shed light on how governments, markets, and societies interact to create the world we live in. Peine researches the role of multinational corporations in the global food regime. We recently sat down with her to learn about international trade, experiential learning, and why we should all be studying food systems.

Greek, Latin, and Mediterranean studies major and honors student Rachel Becker ’23 won the President’s Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Poster at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South (CAMWS) for her poster, “Teaching Suicide Prevention Alongside Virgil’s Aeneid.” As a teenager, Becker received suicide prevention training, and when she read The Aeneid in college, she was struck by how many of the behaviors and thoughts exhibited by the character of Dido were warning signs. For her senior thesis, she created a module about suicide prevention, using The Aeneid to help students identify people in crisis and get them help. Becker plans to run a pilot study of the module and intends to pursue a graduate degree in psychology.

To the Heights

Ron Thomas was fond of quoting poets, from Springsteen to Tennyson, and often talked about the concept of home. In the Spring of 2016, as he was getting ready to step away from his role as president of Puget Sound—the place he had called home for 13 years—he shared this quote from T.S. Eliot in Arches as advice not only to graduating seniors but to Loggers everywhere:

We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time
