Building on this foundation, we feature Dr. Ibrahim Karaman of the Texas A&M University Materials Science and Engineering Department, whose leadership has been central to advancing the field and elevating the department through sustained research excellence and faculty development. We also highlight Dr. Dimitris Lagoudas, whose vision and leadership were instrumental in establishing the Materials Science and Engineering Department and in building its strong national and international standing.

Chevron Professor I, Dr. Ibrahim Karaman, was appointed Department Chair of the newly formed Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSEN) in 2014. Through his exemplary leadership, the department has since grown significantly. MSEN has consistently been recognized as one of the top materials science and engineering programs in the nation and is internationally known for its innovation and impact in the field. Dr. Karaman has made numerous contributions to the processing and characterization of crystalline materials, has published hundreds of articles in prestigious journals, and has multiple patents. He has received several accolades for his contributions, including the ONR Young Investigator Award, the NSF CAREER Award, the Gary Anderson Early Achievement Award from ASME and AIAA, the TMS Robert Lansing Hardy Award, and a Fellowship to ASM. Distinguished University and Regents Professor, Dr. Dimitris Lagoudas, currently holds the Robert C. “Bud” Hagner Chair of Engineering. Dr. Lagoudas is renowned for his pioneering research in the design, characterization, and modeling of multifunctional materials at multiple scales, especially Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) and Adaptive Aerospace Structures. The SMA constitutive models developed by his research group have been integrated into finite element analysis software used worldwide by academia, industry, and government. Dr. Lagoudas has authored more than 500 journal articles and is one of the authors of one of the most widely used books on shape memory alloys. He has received several honors for his contributions to the field, including the Texas A&M Presidential Award of Excellence for Faculty Service to International Students, the William Sweet Smith Prize, the ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Prize, and the SPIE Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
