Dear UO Dropbox user,
Earlier today (March 26), the University of Oregon instituted a new storage limit of 100 GB per person for the UO Dropbox service.
We apologize for the lack of advance notice about this change. We're responding to a quickly shifting storage situation to prevent problems for the entire service.

What's changing?

  • From now on, your UO Dropbox account is limited to 100 GB of storage.
  • If you reach or exceed that limit, you won't be able to upload, change, or sync files until you've cleared space in your account.

What action is required?

  • We recommend checking your Dropbox storage usage. Dropbox won't notify you before you hit the limit, so we encourage you to proactively monitor your use.
  • Broadly speaking, please limit or reduce your use of Dropbox storage to ensure the service continues functioning for the other 19,000 UO Dropbox users. In particular, we're asking for voluntary action by owners of Dropbox team folders, whose storage we can't limit administratively.

Why the change?

  • In short, we're running out of Dropbox storage.
  • Dropbox removed the unlimited data offering from the UO license on March 12. Keeping it would have dramatically increased our costs.
  • Right now, 82% of the UO Dropbox storage allocation is in use — and we saw significant increases in mid-March. However, we're confident we can maintain service levels if everyone moderates their usage.
  • Exceeding our UO-wide storage limit would mean nobody at the UO could upload, change, or sync files.

What are my alternatives?

  • You have access to a range of alternative storage options:
  • We also encourage you to delete any files you no longer need.
  • If you're not sure which option to choose or need help getting started, please contact us!

Where can I get help?

UO IT staff can help you manage your Dropbox storage or switch to a new service.
