Make sure to file taxes!
tax documents, a calculator, a pen, a cup of coffee
International students and scholars are required by law to file US tax documents before the tax deadline. Please note that the US Government (IRS) has extended the federal tax filing and payment deadline to May 17, 2021 for tax year 2020. Even with the extended deadline, ISSS advises you to complete your tax forms as soon as possible. Please note Miami and ISSS staff cannot advise on individual tax filings.

If you earned income in the U.S. in 2020, you are required to file a tax return. If you received income from Miami University you should have received tax documents from the Payroll Office and access to Sprintax software, which can be used to file your non-resident alien taxes.

If you did not earn income in 2020, but were present in the US for one or more days, you must file Form 8843 only.

Failure to file a U.S. tax return can result not only in penalties but also future immigration issues for international students.

If you do not currently hold F-1 status, you can drop below 12 credits. Not sure of your situation? Contact ISSS to check.
Immigration Tip
Returning for Fall 2021? Check your visa expiration!
If you are planning to return to the US for Fall 2021, take a look at the F-1 or J-1 visa in your passport to see if it will still be valid in August 2021. If the expiration date listed on your visa is after your expected re-entry date, you do not need to apply for a new visa! Even if you have been outside the US for more than 5 months, your visa is still valid for re-entry if it has not expired. The immigration officers at the ports of entry into the US are only looking for the correct visa type (F-1 or J-1) and verifying that the visa has not yet expired. Only students with an expired visa (or no visa) need to be concerned about obtaining a new visa prior to entering the US this summer.
