"MAPS Eco" Explorers

Alder College Day!

When: November 4th, 8:50am - 11:00am

For those carpooling, we'll meet at 8:15am just inside the front doors to the Smith Memorial Student Union for check-in

Where: 17200 Southeast Alder Street, 17200 SE Alder St, Portland, Oregon

What: Do you love working with kids? Join PSU’s Student Community Engagement Center for a morning at Alder Elementary School to introduce kindergarteners to what college life is all about!

Become a MAPS "Eco Explorer" After School Mentor at Alder Elementary!

**(SYC Series)**

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, November 3 @ 11:59pm

Starting in: January, every Wednesday from 2:00pm-4:45pm -- commitment through winter and spring terms

Location: Alder Elementary School in East Portland (17200 SE Alder St.)

Optional carpool will leave PSU each week at 1:15pm and return by 5:30pm.

What: Inspire curiosity and confidence through hands-on learning! Mentors will be paired with small groups of students within the after school club and work in both larger and smaller group settings to help kids develop science, math, and social-emotional skills through hands-on activities both in and outside of the garden.

SCEC SYC Shorts + Series

**Walk an adoptable PUP (SYC Series)**

When: On Mondays

November 3rd - December 1st

11:20am - 1:30pm

Location: 1825 SW Broadway M113, Portland, OR

What: For this project, volunteers will take dogs on a 45–60 minute walk near the shelter while encouraging good behaviors such as sit, stay, heel, and paw. Volunteers must have experience walking dogs and be comfortable managing large breeds. To help keep the pups calm and focused, dogs should not interact with other dogs or people during walks.

**Community Warehouse Donations Sorting Pop Up Project (SYC Short)**

When: Saturday, November 8th,

1:00pm - 4:00pm
Location: Community Wearhouse:

464 NE 219th Ave, 97030

What: Help turn donations into meaningful impact for local families! For this project, we will be helping with ongoing projects such as linen donation sorting, silverware bundling, furniture building, and more! Please dress in close-toed shoes, long pants (leggings are ok), and wear shoes you are able to stand in.

This Week's Project Spotlight:

SMART Reading - Volunteer Readers Needed Statewide

Community Partner: SMART Reading (Start Making A Reader Today)

Where: Multiple locations

What: Classroom SMART is a new shared reading model developed during the COVID-19 pandemic that pairs a volunteer with a classroom of students for regular interactive group read-alouds. These reading sessions with a "special guest" volunteer are designed to build excitement and enthusiasm for reading. Students in participating classrooms also choose up to two books per month to keep and read with their families.
