Native & Indigenous American History Month
|
November is Native & Indigenous American History Month. Although it varies by tribe or nation, approximately 20% of indigenous Americans in the United States identify as Catholic. The first Native American saint in the Catholic Church is St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the "Lily of the Mohawks," who was canonized in 2012. She is the patron saint of ecology, the environment, and Indigenous people.

We continue to be inspired by our SHU Reads! book The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by indigenous scientist and author Robin Wall Kimmerer. Here are some upcoming events inspired by Kimmerer's ethic of reciprocity, sustainability, interconnectedness, and gratitude:

Community Organizer Danna Dennis will give a talk titled “Environmental Justice in Motion: Building equitable transportation solutions.” The event is co-sponsored by the Environmental Studies and Africana Studies programs, with generous support from the College of Arts & Sciences.

On November 19, the Adult Book Club at the Plainfield Public Library (at PPAC) will discuss the novel There, There by Tommy Orange, selected in honor of Native American Heritage Month.

On November 22, there is Native American-Inspired Burlap Weaving at the Edison Public Library: Clara Barton Branch—a workshop focusing on the history and cultural significance of Navajo weaving.
