The 2022-23 catalog was published this Monday, which means UMKC Forward changes have started taking visible form. Does that make it feel more real?
I have a tangible collection basket in my office, full of quotes and funny moments that I have had in my seven years in the CAS Dean's Office. Most are kind of inappropriate, some a little dark, lots of inside jokes (that "only the fungi know"). Then, on my bulletin board, I have the names of people I've worked with. These visible forms of marking memories and experiences bring me joy whenever I need it.
Will you all contribute a story, photo, and/or quote to help create an upcoming Thunder & Wonder as a visible collection bursting with nostalgia and affection for the amazing colleagues and friends who form the College of Arts and Sciences? Submit using the collection basket below, or send me (Alicen Lundberg) an email.
Thank you for helping mark memories with me!

Giant Ice Age Mammals of the Kansas City Area
Opening Reception: Thursday, Apr. 14, 11:30 am-1:00 pm Exhibition: Through June 24, 2022 The Box Gallery (1000 Walnut St.)
During the Ice Age, large herds of mammals once dominated the landscape of what is now Kansas City. Most of these “giants” became extinct about 10,000 years ago, many leaving no descendants. Some, however, are represented today by descendants of diminutive size. This exhibit compares skeletal remains of the Ice Age giants with their modern-day relatives. Organized by Professor Emeritus Richard Gentile (Earth and Environmental Sciences).

Propelling work by Mark Brodwin (Physics and Astronomy), who was awarded a grant by the Jet Propulsion Lab for the project The Euclid Mission.
Next time you are selecting your next read, consider Jenny Huberman (Sociology), who recently published The Spirit of Digital Capitalism.

Dan McIntosh (Physics and Astronomy) gave a talk, "A Bridge to the Stars: An Equity-Minded Early-College Experience for Broadening Participation in STEM" through the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development, and you can watch it here!
I am not sure I even know everything Ye Wang (Communication Studies) has been up to recently, but here is some of it:
- Gave a presentation "Teaching Data Science through Storytelling: Improving Undergraduate Data Literacy," for the Scholastic Journalism Division at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Convention in New Orleans, LA.
- Co-authored “Social Media Advertising and Big Data at the Intersection: A Diversity Perspective to Interdisciplinary Communication,” which was awarded a Best Paper Award at the 2021 Conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
- Gave a Tableau overview to interested faculty (can I get one of these, too?).
