Students gather for the final day of class with Professor Allison

Dr. Paul D. Allison, statistical methods expert, retires from Penn following four decades of teaching and research

Dr. Paul Allison, Professor of Sociology and CHOPR Senior Fellow, is best known for his methodological research on the analysis of longitudinal data. His graduate level course on statistics has been a favorite of CHOPR pre- and post-doctoral fellows. Professor Allison has been a long-time collaborator and statistical consultant for CHOPR research. The highly respected professor helped CHOPR trainees understand statistics, making it applicable and enjoyable. CHOPR Alumni said this about Dr. Allison's classes on statistical methods.
"Theoretical and practical understandings of statistics are foundational for quantitative research. Paul Allison’s courses laid that foundation through his thoughtful and clear approach to teaching the core fundamentals. As I learn and use ever advancing statistical methods, I often find myself going back to the basics and remembering with gratitude Dr. Allison’s teaching." Dr. Karen Lasater, Assistant Professor of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania

"To this day, nearly 10 years since my class [with Professor Allison], I still reference his notes and his books! I even refer my students to his books when they are struggling with categorical data analysis or missing data issues. Penn was quite lucky to have him as a faculty member for all these years and I feel privileged to have been taught by him." Dr. Deena Kelly Costa, Assistant Professor of Nursing, University of Michigan and CHOPR Senior Fellow.

"Paul Allison magically explained complicated statistical concepts so easily, even for non-native English speakers such as myself. He helped lay the foundation for me as a nurse scientist with sound quantitative and large data skills." Dr. Chenjuan Ma, Assistant Professor of Nursing, New York University, and CHOPR Senior Fellow.
