Dynamine! Miller doc! Phllip Glass! More!
Dynamine! Miller doc! Phllip Glass! More!
Greetings from a thankfully dry and sunny Henry Miller Library!
The UPS guy just told me that a "dynamite expert"* from the Bay Area is coming down to blow up the hill responsible for the formidable Anderson Canyon slide (check out the scalers below).
The highway is still closed and I guess we're just bracing for a big BOOM from the south! Just another day at the office...

"Wisdom of the Heart" back in print!
Discount for Digesters!
It's true: New Directions just published a new and beautiful edition of "Wisdom of the Heart."
In this selection of stories and essays originally published in 1941, Henry Miller elucidates, revels, and soars, showing his command over a wide range of moods, styles, and subject matters.
Writing “from the heart,” always with a refreshing lack of reticence, Miller involves the reader directly in his thoughts and feelings.

Happy 80th Birthday Phillip Glass!!!
There's an old joke here at the Library: By the time you finish reading this sentence, Philip Glass wrote an opera. And like most jokes, it's rooted in truth!  Check out this New York Times article where Philip talks about how he's celebrating his 80th birthday at Carnegie Hall with the world premiere of his Symphony No. 11!
And while we're at it, SAVE THE DATES! The 2017 Days and Nights Festival will be Sept. 29 - Oct. 8th!)
This Digest's Installment of "Friends of Henry" is...Barney Rosset, Free Speech Bad-Ass!
Upon his passing in 2012, the New York Times declared:
"Barney Rosset, the flamboyant, provocative publisher who helped change the course of publishing in the United States...defied censors in the 1960s by publishing D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer, ultimately winning legal victories that opened the door to sexually provocative language and subject matter in literature published in the United States." Not too shabby!
The Guardian recently published a review of Barney's memoir. Check it out here!
Meet Linnea Stephan, VFL (Volunteer for Life) and photographer extraordinaire!
Last year we had the pleasure of getting to know Linnea Stephan during her stint as an HML volunteer. Linnea also happens to be a most exceptional photographer (see below!). To learn more about her and to check out here work, click here!
"Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way**" — Visit our new improved YouTube page!
So we kicked around the bowels of our rusty YouTube account and realized, "Oh man, we can do much better!" And we (arguably) did! Specifically, enjoy our various playlists including Henry Miller, Music at the Library (featuring past performances and birthday boy Philip Glass practicing [below!]), and, of course, "The Continuing Story of Hippie Sven!"
"Soul of California" featuring Magnus — with new and improved audio! Free!
You may have missed it the first time, and if so, that's okay, because Richard Dion, the brain(s) behind Soul of California, a most excellent podcast that lets leading thinkers, writers, academics and artists talk about their work and the influence of California on that work, has spruced up their conversation with Magnus discussing "Henry Miller's Big Sur" here! Magnus is also featured in the "Best of 2016" podcast here!
* Update: The UPS guy said no dynamite guy just yet. Still too precarious.
**Yes that's a Pink Floyd shout-out in honor of Hippie Sven
