September is National College Savings Month |
College Savings Month is a great reminder that planning ahead can make education more affordable and less stressful. Whether students plan to attend a university, community college, career technology center, or other postsecondary training program, developing strong saving habits early can help them achieve their goals.
This edition of our newsletter highlights key features of the OKMM website and spotlights two of our 14 financial literacy modules: Borrowing Money and Insurance.

The Borrowing Money module introduces students to the responsibilities and consequences that come with borrowing money. Whether financing a vehicle, paying for their education or making a major purchase, understanding how loans work is an important financial skill.
| |
Students explore key concepts such as:
-
Types of loans, including student loans, auto loans and personal loans.
- Interest rates and how they affect the total cost of borrowing.
- Loan terms, monthly payments and repayment schedules.
- The consequences of missed or late payments.
By understanding risk, return and time horizon, students will develop skills that can help them make informed decisions about how to grow their money and prepare for future financial goals.
To learn more, review the Borrowing Money module at OklahomaMoneyMatters.org.

The Insurance module helps students understand how insurance protects individuals and families from financial losses resulting from unexpected events. Insurance plays a key role in managing risk and maintaining financial stability. Students learn that insurance works by transferring risk from an individual to an insurance company in exchange for a premium.
| Students explore topics including:
- Common types of insurance, like health, auto, renters', and homeowners’ insurance.
- Insurance terms, including premiums, deductibles and coverage limits.
- How insurance policies help protect assets and income.
- Factors that can affect insurance costs.
As students enter adulthood, insurance becomes an important part of financial planning. Developing an understanding of risk management and insurance products can help students protect themselves financially and prepare for unexpected events.

To access all 14 Personal Financial Literacy modules, visit the High School Students section at OklahomaMoneyMatters.org. Students are encouraged to read each standard and take the interactive quiz at the end of the lesson. Quiz results can be emailed directly to their counselor or instructor afterwards.
