Seasons Greetings,
We start this newsletter with gratitude. Thank you to the faculty and staff at the 13 Universities of Wisconsin for your partnership in creating opportunities for students to learn hands-on skills in water. Thank you to the external partners who enrich those programs and hire UW graduates.

Thank you to the university Provosts and Chancellors, President Rothman and the Board of Regents for continued support as we build collaborative initiatives across all universities. And thank you to the Wisconsin State Legislature and Governor Evers for your ongoing bipartisan investment in water education and training.
All of us working together make Wisconsin THE place to study and work in water!
This newsletter focuses on hands-on training that is preparing UW graduates for careers in freshwater. We also share opportunities for more students to participate in programs and gain experience next summer. I encourage you to share these opportunities with students.
Warmest wishes for the new year,
Marissa Jablonski

Did you know bugs are used to assess water health? It's called biomonitoring, and experts and students from UW-Parkside, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Madison and the Milwaukee Public Museum are expanding access to decades of Wisconsin's collections of aquatic insects and invertebrates. AND they're having a lot of fun adding to the collection.

Knowing how to communicate scientific research to the broader community helped Claire Schoenemann, a 2025 graduate of UW-Eau Claire, land a job with Foth Infrastructure & Environment. It’s a skill she learned working on a summer project to provide safe drinking water information to homeowners.

Hands-on internships turn challenging field moments into invaluable professional preparation. With Freshwater Collaborative funding, UW Oshkosh provides dozens of undergraduates around the state with summer field and lab experiences that get them ready for water careers. Students from UW-Whitewater and UW-Madison share some of the lessons they learned last summer.

Research can be intimidating. Oconomowoc native Sam Krueger says participating in the Freshwater@UW Summer Research Opportunities program made it fun and accessible. The UW-Whitewater graduate is now in her second year of graduate school at UW-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences. She’s investigating microplastics, PFAS and heavy metals in Milwaukee Harbor and Green Bay sediments.
